Waipio Valley
The valley of the Hawaiian Kings located minutes down the road on highway 240. Waipio has a mile long black sand beach and the tallest free falling waterfall in the USA. It is a 3/4 of a mile hike down to the valley with a 27% plus grade; I zig-zag when walking down to save the knees. For those with back, knee or leg issues there are a variety of tours. Access to the valley floor is by walking, 4 wheel drive vehicles, or local tours. Do not take two wheel drive car down this road – 4 wheel drive only.

Hiking into the valley is restricted at this time due to road safety.
Honokaa Town
Is a quaint vintage sugar plantation village with a western flavor. One of the oldest theaters in Hawaii. Lots of fun shops to explore including antiques and two new chocolate shops plus various places to eat. Google offers extensive listing & reviews for eateries.
Kukuihaele
Is an old sugar planation village with a Waipio Artworks featuring local artist including woodworkers, watercolorist & jewelry. It also has an extensive Hawaii book collection for sale.
Kalopa State Park
This 100-acre State Park and Recreation Area is a bit off the beaten path, located near the village of Honokaa. The location of the park keeps the traffic light. If you’re looking for solitude, you have a great chance of finding it here. Located on the upcountry, windward slopes of Mauna Kea, the park gets a significant amount of rainfall. This rainfall creates an enchanting and lush native forest. There are multiple trails to chose from.
